La victoria electoral de Salvador Allende supuso para el gobierno del General Alfredo Stroessner un conflicto abierto entre sus fronteras ideológicas y el pluralismo ideológico. Mediante un trabajo de análisis de fuentes diplomáticas, buscamos ampliar la comprensión del Paraguay y su importancia regional. Además, este estudio considera las posteriores relaciones bilaterales entre ambos países tras el golpe de Estado del 11 de septiembre de 1973 en Chile, posicionando el papel que cumplió “la conexión paraguaya” y su incidencia. Proponemos que sobre antecedentes históricos de larga data, sumados a mutuos intereses locales y regionales, a la tensión revolución-contrarrevolución, el anticomunismo y la Doctrina de Seguridad del Estado, las agencias de los aparatos diplomáticos buscaron armonizar las ásperas relaciones entre gobiernos de signos contrarios constituyéndose en observadores privilegiados frente a los casos de asilos. Asunción se convirtió en un espacio de conexión transnacional donde se dio cobertura oficial a diversas organizaciones contrarrevolucionarias y miembros de Patria y Libertad que se articularon bajo una metódica contrasubversiva apoyados por una sólida colonia antiallendista. Tras la caída de la Unidad Popular, el gobierno del Paraguay rápidamente respaldó a la Junta Militar chilena, permitiendo todo tipo de ayuda y cooperación con el objetivo de proyectar una imagen de derrota del comunismo internacional. El establecimiento de una alianza bilateral contra posibles amenazas regionales afianzó el control interno de manera cada vez más represiva auto validándose en su autoritarismo.The cordial historical diplomatic relations between Paraguay and Chile, from their independence processes to the end of the Cold War in the Southern Cone, faced significant tensions only during the period of the Unidad Popular. The electoral victory of Salvador Allende posed an open conflict for General Alfredo Stroessner's government between ideological borders and ideological pluralism. Through an analysis of diplomatic sources, this article aims to expand understanding of Paraguay and its regional importance. Moreover, the article considers subsequent bilateral relations between the two countries following the coup d’état of September 11, 1973, in Chile and highlights the role played by “the Paraguayan connection” and its influence. I propose that, based on long-standing historical precedents, combined with mutual local and regional interests, the tension between revolution and counterrevolution, anti-communism, and the Doctrine of State Security, the diplomatic apparatuses sought to harmonize the strained relations between governments of opposing ideologies. In the end, the states were privileged observers in asylum cases. Asunción became a space of transnational connection where official coverage was provided to various counterrevolutionary organizations and members of Patria y Libertad, who adopted a methodical countersubversive approach supported by a solid anti-Allende colony. After the fall of the Unidad Popular, Paraguay’s government swiftly backed the Chilean Military Junta, enabling all forms of assistance and cooperation.
