description This research consists in the definition of a watershed through the usage of free license software so that any user would be able to access them without any cost at all. Defining a watershed requires to know the covered area and its respective subbasins, one must be able to establish drainage networks, know the waters and have notion of the annual yield rate that feeds the watershed and supply it with different benefits that allow the processes that occur in it. This event can be biological, physical, economic and social. The way in which a watershed or basin is studied as well as its delimitations are performed is by using softwares to process satellite images of the area of interest, this means that it’s provided with several interpretations which are given by a software so that it’s finally possible to get the product that in this case would be the watershed properly defined. As a matter of fact, in order to get this done some other soft wares have been greatly used such as Google®Earth™ as a satellite image source. The digital elevation models provided by NASA have been part of this work as well. The processing of these images was carried out using the software QGIS, along with another complementary software called GRASS GIS. The San Pablo River in Panama was the one chosen as subject of study for this research because of its great importance to the region of the province of Veraguas.

Definir una cuenca comprende conocer el área que abarca, definición de sus respectivas subcuencas, establecer las redes de drenaje, conocer el parte aguas, el caudal y el rendimiento anual que mantiene para abastecer los distintos usos que se den en ella, que pueden ser: biológicos, físicos, económicos y sociales. La manera en que se estudia la cuenca y su delimitación, se realiza mediante el uso de un software que procesa imágenes satelitales del lugar de interés, las cuales se someten a distintas interpretaciones con ayuda del software para así finalmente obtener el producto que sería la cuenca debidamente definida. En este trabajo, se ha utilizado Google ®Earth TM como fuente de obtención de imágenes, también se ha dado uso de modelos digitales de elevación otorgados por la NASA; el procesamiento de dichas imágenes se ha llevado a cabo mediante el uso del software QGIS, en acompañamiento de un complemento llamado GRASS GIS.
